Harry Houdini owned one of America’s oldest magic shops, the famed Martinka and Co. in New York, and in 1919 he published a small catalog that combined listings for the store’s products as well as simple magic effects.
The 12-page booklet is filled with period illustrations and descriptions for its early twentieth-century offerings like their ornate wooden New Dice Box and Vulcan’s Magic Wand. Throughout the book, you’ll find basic magic effects like “The Mesmerized Walking Stick” and stunts like “The Obstinate Card.”
This vintage pamphlet concludes with a brief essay, “Magic as an Entertainment,” and a classic photo of Houdini in chains on the back cover, reminding clients who owned the shop.
Our facsimile reproduces the 1919 original from the Karr Collection. Like our other reprints, we haven’t re-typeset the text, so you can see the actual original pages.
