Houdini spent years exposing fraudulent spirit mediums, supposed psychics, and other phony mystics, and in 1924 he collected some of his main investigations into this tome. Its sixteen chapters include Houdini’s important research into alleged spirit communicators like the Fox Sisters, Daniel Dunglas Home, the Davenport Brothers, Henry Slade, and Eusapia Palladino, as well as essays on topics like his views on the gullible beliefs of his friend Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the normally-logical creator of Sherlock Holmes.

A Magician Among the Spirits has a number of intriguing photos of Houdini, who also wrote the book’s preface and lengthy introduction, plus sections exposing the secrets of slate-writing, spirit photography, and other otherworldly frauds.
