From 1922 to 1924, Houdini helped test the allegedly otherworldly abilities of Mina Crandon, a Boston spiritualistic medium known as “Margery” who claimed to contact the spirit world at her darkened séances. After his gullible Scientific American committee friends fell for her fraud, Houdini composed this 1924 booklet about his extensive sessions to expose her wily methods, posing for many of the photos himself inside the uncomfortable-looking isolation box he’d devised. The work also features detailed drawings of Houdini and the tricky medium during her séances.
The pamphlet is actually two books in one: following the Margery exposé is “Joaquin Maria Argamasilla: The Spaniard with the X-Ray Eyes,” an eight-page section on Houdini’s explanations of the techniques of phony Spanish mystic Joaquin Maria Argamasilla.
Our facsimile reproduces the 1924 first edition from the Karr Collection. Like our other reprints, we haven’t re-typeset the text, so you can see the actual original pages.
